Andréa Maciel Garcia
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1972, Andréa Maciel Garcia is a dancer and actress and teaches in the Centro Universitário da Cidade's Dramatic Arts Program. She graduated with a degree in Dance from the Escola do Teatro Municipal de Belo Horizonte -- Palácio das Artes and with a degree in Theater from UNIRIO (University of Rio de Janeiro). She has studied with Klaus Vianna, Pino di Buduo (director of Teatro Potlach), François Kan (of Teatro de Pontedera) and Antônio Nóbrega. She has been a Dance and Body Movement teacher since 1992. She has taught Contemporary Dance at COART (UERJ's Institute of Arts), and Body Movement for students pursuing a career in art education at the Escola de Arte do Brasil. From 1995 to 1998, she also taught Drama at the Escola de Teatro Martins Pena. From 1991 to 1998, she was a member of the Cia. Dança Márica Rubin, Regina Miranda and Tabula Rasa ballet companies, with whom she danced at important dance events such as Panorama Rio-arte de dança/RJ, Dança Brasil/RJ, and the Carlton Dance Festival. She worked as a Body Movement coach in the shows Bárbara do Crato (Palácio Tiradentes, BH/2002) and Mulher (a musical directed by Marcos Leite). Since 2001, Garcia has been developing her own choreographic work in collaboration with artists from different areas of the arts. The shows Felicidade, Saias ao Léu and Desmatéria are the result of that work. Since 2003, she has developed several performances, videos and performance installations. Currently she is completing her master's in Performance and Anthropology at the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) with a work entitled O Chão nas Cidades. Performance e População de Rua (The ground of the cities. Performance and Street Population).
